Mould awareness and safety training

The UK Centre for Mould Safety recognises and lists mould-safe individuals based on their competence, skills and experience.

We recognise five different levels of competency: 

1. Mould-Aware Individual

2. Mould-Safe Operative

3. Mould-Safe Housing Professional

4. Mould-Safe Specialist

5. Mould-Safe Investigator and Consultant​

We have a simple three step application process. 


1) Pledge to follow the UK Centre for Mould Safety's 'Five Golden Rules' to protect public health. Read more about the Mould Safe Code.

2) Provide evidence of relevant training and practical experience (see evidence required and training options below). 

​

3) Pay £100+VAT annual administration fee (payable each year).

The UK Centre for Mould Safety recognises the following five levels of competency. 

​​​​​

1. Mould-Aware Individual

​​

For mould hazard aware individuals that ‘Make Every Contact Count’, per government guidance. Landlords and/or their workforce (internal staff, and external contractors) 

​​

Courses recognised:

​​​

  • UKCMS Damp and Mould Hazard Awareness and Making Every Contact Count - ½ day interactive online - £80

​​

2. Mould-Safe Operative

​​

For Mould-Safe competent workers in the built environment for deliberate minor mould works, or incidental contact. 

​​

One of these recognised courses:

​​

  • UKCMS sponsored Damp and Mould Hazard Awareness (1 day - £125)

  • UKCMS Sponsored Damp and Mould Remedial Operations and Planning (2 day - £250)

  • IICRC Applied Microbial Remediation Technician (4-day in person - £825) - (exam not required)

Competency Requirements: 

​​

  • Evidence of 5 practical examples submitted to the UK Centre for Mould Safety expert panel for approval 

​​

Recommended courses for professional development: 

​​​​

​​

​3. Mould-Safe Housing Professional
 

For mould-safe competent surveyors / housing managers / landlords. 

​​

Requires one element from each of these 3 segments:  

​​

SEGMENT 1 - one of these 

​​​

  • UKCMS Sponsored Damp and Mould Remedial Operations and Planning (2 day - £250) - previously accessed via the Restoration Academy  

  • IICRC Applied Microbial Remediation Technician (without exam pass) 

​​​

SEGMENT 2 - one of these 

​​​

  • ABBE - Level 3 - Introduction to Damp, Mould and Condensation, Environment Study Centre

       with Professor John Edwards   

  • A building surveying degree or diploma  

​​​

SEGMENT 3 - one of these 

​​​

  • UKCMS Practical Use of Moisture Meters (1 day - £150) 

  • IICRC Building Moisture Inspection https://iicrc.org/bmi/

Recommended courses for professional development:

  • IICRC Building Moisture Investigation https://iicrc.org/bmi/

4. Mould-Safe Specialist

​​​

For mould-safe competent specialist mould / microbial remediators

​​​

Recognised Pathways: 

​​​

  • IICRC Water Restoration Technician + IICRC Applied Microbial Remediation Technician (exam passed & ongoing membership) 

  • IICRC Mould Remediation Specialist (proof of experience and exam) 

​​​

5. Mould-Safe Investigator and Consultant​

​​

Recognised Certifications: 

​​​

  • ACAC Microbial Investigations & Consulting Pathway (0,2,8 years)

  • ACAC Residential Mould Inspection Pathway (2 years)
